These are the FFDD24 competition films

Tadaa - these are our competition films of the 36 FILMFEST DRESDEN 2024! A total of 60 short films from 28 countries will be screened in Dresden from 16 to 21 April. From around 3,100 film submissions, our selection committees chose 30 (co-)productions for the International Competition, 23 entries for the National Competition and seven works for the Central German Competition. The films are competing for 16 "Golden Horseman" and special prizes totalling EUR 72,000.

Traditionally, there are a large number of animated films in the competitions: twelve of the 30 entries in the International Competition are animated short films - in addition to twelve fictional and six hybrid works. This year's selected films come from Chile, Haiti, Colombia, Indonesia, Iran, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam, among others.

Of the 23 films in the National Competition, animations (twelve) predominate in contrast to eight fictional and three hybrid works. Six films were co-productions, including with Hong Kong, Iran and Denmark.

Particularly noteworthy: All seven films in the Central German Competition were made without the involvement of film schools.

Thematically, the films in the competitions take up related topics across borders. This year's focus is particularly on utopia and dystopia - in line with the festival's main theme (e.g. ZOOPTICON (National Competition) and THE ELECTRIC KISS (International Competition)). Several works in the competitions (e.g. TECHNICALLY_BREATHING (National Competition) or KINDERFILM (International Competition)) also deal with the topic of artificial intelligence. The search for identity and gender issues are other themes that can also be found in the competition entries (such as ES GIBT KEINE ANGST (Central German Competition) or NOCTURNO PARA UMA FLORESTA (International Competition)).

You can see all the programmes from 16 to 21 April 2024 at the Dresden venues. Stay curious and come along!
