Queer, open and for everyone - Short Film Tour 2024

Small but mighty, short but witty - the short film genre is both a varied field of experimentation and a creative treasure trove. For the sixth time in a row, we are showing short films that depict social and human diversity on a Saxon film tour.

The five films selected from the FILMFEST DRESDEN programme show a diversity of genders and lifestyles. This year's winning film of the LUCA Film Award for GenderDiversity, which has been awarded at the festival in April since 2018, awaits the audience. Complemented by a best-of from recent years, the film programme questions stereotypical notions of gender roles, provides insights into the reality of life for queer people and people of colour and challenges traditional expectations. It shows: People are diverse and diversity enriches our society.

The films will be introduced and presented individually, and after the programme there will also be an opportunity for conversation and discussion.

Free admission, the film programme will be presented in German.

Programme 2024:

  • IN NATURE by Marcel Barelli (Switzerland 2021), 5 Min
    • In nature, a couple is a male and a female. Well, not always! A couple is also a female and a female. Or a male and a male. You may not know it, but homosexuality is not just a human story.
  • WEIL ICH LEO BIN by Tajo Hurrle (Germany 2021), 18 Min
    • Wide meadows, romping through the woods and building cabins. Twelve-year-old Leo is spending the autumn holidays with the older sister Noémie and cousin Emil on Grandma Marlies’ farm. However, when Leo is surprised by big news, Leo faces an identity crisis.
  • MRS MCCUTCHEON by John Sheedy (Australia 2017), 17 Min
    • Tom has always felt he was born in the wrong body. Now at his third school, he is having trouble settling in and finding acceptance from his newfound peers – except for Trevor, who also suffers prejudice due to his Aboriginal heritage.
  • THE DANCE-OFF by Nicolás Keller Sarmiento (USA, Argentina 2023), 13 Min
    • Deep in a rural town's flatlands, a young queer boy, Ernesto, secretly dreams of becoming a dancer. Mind you, no ‘real’ men dance around here. But it’s only after a magical encounter with a broken-hearted drag queen, Ruby, that Ernesto finds the courage to do so.
  • MY ORANGE GARDEN by Anna-Sophia Richard (Germany 2023), 21 Min
    • MY ORANGE GARDEN tells the story of the Iranian singer Faravaz Farvardin, who was set to be arrested by the Iranian police for singing in public. The film dives into Faravaz childhood memories and her journey in finally finding her homeland within her own body.
