35 Filmfest Dresden draws positive conclusion
16,100 festival visitors // 36th Filmfest Dresden: 16-21 April 2024
Last Sunday, the 35th edition of Filmfest Dresden came to a successful close. Between 18 and 23 April, a total of around 16,100 festival visitors (2022: 12,900) came to 188 events in the 16 Dresden venues. Of these, around 8,950 people (2022: 7,700) found their way to the cinemas, which were once again completely free of restrictions. The open-air programme at the new venue on Schlossplatz attracted almost 5,000 people, almost twice as many as in the cold and rainy previous year. The events of the supporting programme etc. - events. trainings. connections. were attended by 2,150 interested people (2022: 1,350). Ten Golden Hirsemen and six special prizes worth 72,000 euros were awarded at the festive awards ceremony on Saturday evening at the Filmtheater Schauburg. The 36 Filmfest Dresden will take place from 16 to 21 April 2024.
"We are overjoyed to have welcomed so many people to our 35th edition," said festival directors Sylke Gottlebe and Anne Gaschütz. "The festival week was marked by great film screenings and events, exciting and inspiring encounters and a roaring festival party. We would like to thank the filmmakers very much for their trust and their works, which made the festival an unforgettable experience."
Among the most successful events at the 35 Filmfest Dresden were the International, National and Central German Competition programmes. In the children's and youth film programme, the Kids 1 programme was, as usual, very popular. Among the special programmes, the programme RIPPLE EFFECT from the focus programme EXIT HAPPYLAND was particularly popular. Also well attended were the special programmes "Focus Québec," the retrospective THE SWEET WORD FREEDOM - THE LITHUANIAN UNDERGROUND FILMER ARTŪRAS BARYSAS (1954 - 2005), the International PANORAMA as well as the popular SERIOUSLY? WTF! - SURPRISE! SURPRISE? (CINEMA DIGESTIF 2) in the late slot at Thalia Kino and the NO TEA NO SHADE - FESTIVAL DRAG PARTY.
In the supporting programme etc. - events. trainings. connections. WHAT'S THE POINT OF TRIGGER WARNINGS?, the three Sandwich Talks and the exhibition opening DER BEWAHRTE BLICK - FILM- UND TONSCHÄTZE AUS SACHSEN by the Filmverband Sachsen and the Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek (SLUB) were among the most successful events.
