Positive Conclusion to the 31 Filmfest Dresden
Over 18,000 Visitors // Surge in Ticket Sales // Enthusiastic Response to the Special Programmes // 2020 Festival Date: 21 - 26 April
After the ceremonial awarding of the eleven Golden Horsemen trophies and the three special prizes at a total value of €67,200 on Saturday evening, the 31 Filmfest Dresden came to an end on Sunday night after six highly successful days. More than 18,000 festival visitors, including over 500 filmmakers and industry professionals, enjoyed the highly varied film programmes and events at a total of 16 venues. Due to the cool temperatures, the Short Film Open Air screenings on Neumarkt square drew smaller crowds than in the previous year. For that, a clear increase in the ticket sales at the indoor screening venues was achieved.
Together with the frequently sold-out programmes in the National and International Competition sections, the various special programmes also proved highly popular: The "Focus on Cuba" programme, as well as classics such as the Children and Youth Programme, the "Regional Film Night" and the screening with the nominations for the Best Sound Design Prize attracted great interest from the audiences. Among the new formats, the "SERIOUSLY! WTF? - Lost in Space" midnight programme and the screening with the nominations for the GenderDiversity Film Award were exceptionally well attended. Likewise, the new festival screening venues, such as the Kino in der Fabrik cinema, recorded several sold-out screenings.
"For us, such highly positive feedback provides wonderful confirmation of our work and that we succeeded yet again in exciting and enthusing the visitors with our ideas, Festival Director Sylke Gottlebe commented with satisfaction. "And especially during the stimulating and inspiring exchanges between the film guests, the industry professionals and the audiences, we experienced many intensive and emotionally moving moments, all of which contributed to making the festival atmosphere so magical."
With a selection of the prize-winning films and audience favourites from this year’s 31st festival edition, the summer Open Air Tour of Filmfest Dresden is commencing with the Short Film Night at the Film Nights on the Banks of the Elbe event on 12 July 2019.
