Preview on FFDD26: Retrospective - Places of Work

The history of cinema began with “La Sortie de l’Usine Lumière à Lyon” – and with it the close connection between film and the world of work. This early film by the brothers Auguste Lumière and Louis Lumière shows workers leaving a factory and symbolises the social change that has shaped the medium since its inception.

The “Work in Progress” retrospective at FILMFEST DRESDEN picks up on this development and turns its gaze to working worlds from the 20th century to the present day. The cinematic journey takes us through different times and places – from the GDR provinces to Europe – and also encounters the unmistakable world of Aki Kaurismäki.
