Preview on FFDD26: 90 Years of African Animation

For this year’s Animated Programme, FILMFEST DRESDEN invited Egyptian animation filmmaker and scholar Mohamed Ghazala to curate a special programme celebrating 90 years of African animation.

As director and associate professor of animation, Ghazala brings together a selection of films that reflects the richness and diversity of animation across the African continent. The programme traces a journey through vibrant storytelling, bold creativity and ancestral imagination, highlighting both early pioneers and contemporary visionaries.

“90 Years of African Animation” offers audiences a rare opportunity to discover the colours, rhythms and voices that have shaped African animation into a living and continuously evolving art form. The curated selection showcases different styles, techniques and perspectives, revealing the unique cultural and artistic landscapes that have influenced animation across Africa.

The programme will be presented as part of the Animated Programme at FILMFEST DRESDEN 2026.
