The industry rendezvous with Dresden-based film institutes traditionally provides a relevant platform for discussions and exchanges on current topics in regional filmmaking and conveying aspects of the film culture, as well as the cultural policy conditions required for this. Again at this year’s event, this industry rendezvous is commencing with a fishbowl-format discussion entitled “Film Culture in Rural Areas Brings People Together?!”.
Based on the perspectives of those involved in this area, as well as of the funders and related communal structures, the intention is to discuss the impacts and needs of initiatives specifically aimed at strengthening film culture in rural areas. Which ones already exist and how are the current budgetary developments in the cultural sector affecting them? How visible have these initiatives been to their target audiences to date? What is really needed on a local level so as to conduct (film) culture work in rural areas? Which structural requirements are there in addition to the financial ones? Do people from differing backgrounds engage with each other at these events? Can film culture foster democracy? The discussion, in which all participants are welcome to join via an open forum, aims to highlight what film culture work in rural areas achieves, where it faces limitations, and how it can be better supported in the future.
Following the discussion, the Dresden-based film institutes, AG Kurzfilm – German Short Film Association, Saxon Film Association, German Institute for Animated Film (DIAF), MOVE IT! Film Festival, Dresden-based schmalfilmtage film festival and FILMFEST DRESDEN are together inviting everyone to a reception.
Fishbowl with:
Gisela Förster, former City Manager of Neustadt in Saxony
André Peters, Kinoinhaber Grenzland Lichtspiele in Neustadt in Saxony
Carsten Möller, Kino in Bewegung
Presenter: Short Film Programme Manager, Berlinale Generation Section & Presenter at the Shortfilm Tours of FILMFEST DRESDEN
By invitation or registration by email to festival@filmfest-dresden.de, in German
Presented by AG Kurzfilm, German Institute for Animated Film (DIAF), schmalfilmtage, Saxon Film Association, MOVE IT! Film Festival and FILMFEST DRESDEN

LUCA advocates for the recognition of all genders and completely denounces sexism and discrimination. The commitment demonstrated here in this form is virtually unique within the festival scene, and especially in the short film area. The nominated films provide space for differing ways of living and loving, break with conventions and reveal new perspectives. They speak of love, acceptance and solidarity – and of the right to free and self-determined lives. In this way, stereotypes are broken, while various experiences of violence that women* and men* have had are thematised, as indeed are the experiences of people with multiple sexual identities.
Representatives from the Saxon Gender Competence Centre, the LAG Jungen- und Männerarbeit Sachsen e. V. boys and men’s advocacy association in Saxony and the LAG Queeres Netzwerk Sachsen e. V. queer Saxon network, represented this year by FILMFEST DRESDEN, have acted as a pre-jury and selected the films. They are attending the film discussion after the screening together with the main jury of the LUCA GenderDiversity Film Award and are happy to answer any questions from the audience.

being held for the sixth time as part of FILMFEST DRESDEN. SHORT TIGER NEXT GENERATION 2026 comprises a selection of the best productions from German film schools and young directing talents from the independent scene.
The jury, consisting of the director Anna Roller (whose second feature film ALLEGRO PASTELL was recently invited to the Berlinale Panorama section), the short film distributor Sarah Dombrink (interfilm Berlin), and the cinema operator Andreas Heidenreich (Kommunales Kino Weiterstadt municipal cinema and board member of the German Federal Association of Municipal Cinemas), included ten films in their selection this year and chose five winners of the SHORT TIGER 2026. The short film award, sponsored by the FFA funding body and endowed with €5,000, is provided to the winners for the preparation or production of a new film.
The aim of the initiative is to strengthen the perception of short films within the public sphere and increase their screenings in the cinemas. The filmmakers receive a platform to present their films throughout the year in cinemas here in Germany, as well as at media industry events abroad.
We are delighted that numerous filmmakers are attending the screening. After the premiere of the programme, GERMAN FILMS is sending the films on a world tour, with the first international stop-off being the Cannes Film Festival in May 2026. The five FFA Short Tiger winning films can be booked by German cinemas via the Kurzfilm Agentur Hamburg short film agency.
In cooperation with the FFA film funding body, the German Films export body and AG Kurzfilm – the German short film association

Already for the 12th time FILMFEST DRESDEN is opening up a window to the world in the middle of this imposing ensemble of buildings with its unique atmosphere. As usual, the works being screened include highlights from the festival season, as well as a best-of selection with regional, national and international short films. For instance, the films are inviting us to join in some “urban shenanigans,” immerse ourselves in the “orbits of everyday life,” or even explore a few “fragile worlds”. In our festival programme for this year’s thematic focus on “Work in Progress”, among others, we are probing the relationships between humans and nature, as well as examining the theme of work from unusual perspectives. Our selection of films is empathetic, humorous, original, powerful and even dramatic at times, while always being creative explorations of current issues that move us.
The programme is not short on fun for our young audiences either. Our ever-popular Family Shorts programme will again enthuse short film fans from all age groups. There is so much to discover here – and just as much to discuss afterwards.
It goes without saying that FILMFEST DRESDEN cannot guarantee stable weather conditions in April. But what we can promise is the most wonderful big screen entertainment on our high-resolution and daylight-capable LED screen.
Free admission. If you enjoy the screenings, we are happy to receive donations.

ONCE AROUND THE WORLD
For young audiences five years and older, the 38. FILMFEST DRESDEN is again presenting current international children’s and youth short films that bring a blast of the big world onto the cinema screens in Dresden. With lots of feeling and a dash of humour, not only do these short films provide good entertainment, but also vital food for thought. During the screenings, the audiences will have an opportunity to talk to the filmmakers in attendance, fire questions at them and share their opinions.
THE YOUNG CURATORS
The five programmes were compiled with the energetic support of 33 young and enthusiastic film fans from Dresden and the surrounding area. These consist of the Young Curators who, during the festival preparations, viewed many short films together, discussed them, and voted on their final selection. The result of which is the kid’s and youth programme, complete with its own programme title. During the festival week, the film-crazy members of the Young Curators are going to present their favourite films to the cinema audiences and blast the invited filmmakers with a whole array of questions.
We wish you lots of fun at the movies, says: Anni (5), Fritzi (7), Maxim (8), Bruno (8), Lou (9), Jaro (9), Dante (9), Pina (9), Nicoleta (9), Jakob (10), Lilith (10), Julika (10), Gustav G. For more than 15 years, the original and imaginative animated films from Antje Heyn, Alexander Isert and the Protoplanet team have enriched our festival. It all began with LUMO, which won the 2010 Golden Horseman Award for Best Animated Film. This was followed by PAWO and META – films full of astounding transformations. For the festival’s 30th anniversary in 2018, Protoplanet even created the festival trailer.
Soon after that, wonderful animated films for children such as CAT LAKE CITY and FOREVER SEVEN were produced – films that became audience favourites and warmed our hearts. This year, we can’t wait for their children’s book adaptation ON THE MAT OUTSIDE MY DOOR, which is screening in the Kids 1 programme “Beastly Amount to Discover”.
In the workshop, we’re about to discover how drawings come to life and become transformed right before our eyes. Whether drawn, cut out or moulded from clay: It’s all about metamorphoses – the magic of images and their astonishing transformations. Get ready for the excitement – and let yourself be enchanted!
The premiere of the workshop results, as well as many further animated films from the Fantasia Dresden Animation School are waiting to be enjoyed by small and big film fans on the silver screen once more at the Kids Special screening.
Please submit applications to attend the workshop by email to info@fantasia-dresden.de.

Well-founded reviews of short films are rare. And people who write about short films are even rarer. For this reason, the online magazine Talking Shorts was launched in 2020 to take a critical look at this medium. Three years later, the European Network for Film Discourse (The END) was founded that, among others, organises tandem workshops to teach aspiring film critics the basic craft of film criticism in order to subsequently publish the resulting texts on talkingshorts.com. This year’s workshop is being held in Dresden in collaboration with our friends from VIENNA SHORTS.
This year’s edition centers on podcasting as a vibrant medium for film criticism and is being led by Susanne Braun and Yugen Yah, the creators of the podcast "Indiefilmtalk".

We are delighted to welcome Gerhard Funk, an independent filmmaker whose work revolves around experimental animated short films, to this event. After completing his studies in media art and design, he worked as a 3D artist, motion designer and animator in both full-time and freelance positions. Since 2020, he has been an Artistic Associate at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, Saale, where he lectures in 2D and 3D animation. His films have been screened at numerous international festivals and won several awards.
The talk is focusing on his new experimental animated short film RANDOM FOLKS. Based on an AI-driven evolutionary scenario, in which randomly generated virtual creatures are optimised through mutation and performance-based selection, the film becomes a humorous yet thought-provoking parable about adaptation and the pressure to perform, as well as about the question of meaning and failure.
Afterwards, we cordially invite you to a cozy get-together in the bar area – the perfect opportunity to make new contacts, get to know like-minded people and discuss mutual projects and ideas. You can also talk to Gerhard in this relaxed atmosphere and delve deeper into the various topics.
We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Year after year, the answers sound familiar: champion the arts, support filmmakers, foster dialogue, build bridges. Worthy phrases – and repeated often enough to risk becoming institutional elevator music, mantras recited out of habit. So why keep writing intros if whoever reads them already knows what they will say?
Perhaps because an introduction is neither justification nor manifesto, but an invitation – setting the tone for how we wish to gather. Festivals cannot fix the world, but they can carve out temporary spaces where we practise being together: listening, laughing, disagreeing, attentive and curious.
The films ground that attention. This year’s programme navigates the complexities of our times with works that sometimes shout and sometimes whisper – films that hesitate, observe and insist on ambiguity in a world demanding certainty. Some confront systems of power directly; others trace them in the everyday across individual identities and collective histories.
When audiences meet these works, differences inevitably surface. Expectations collide; assumptions are challenged. Yet this friction is not a failure, but pluralism at work. We enter the cinema shaped by our own experiences, hopes and desires; to share those spaces means to encounter viewpoints that unsettle our own, and to renegotiate what we thought we knew.
Festivals are not neutral containers. Every selection carries a perspective, reflecting not only the realities filmmakers witness but also the kinds of conversations we as programmers hope to host in a temporary landscape shaped by those who enter it. We may keep writing these introductions simply to mark that shared beginning – to acknowledge that, for a few hours, we choose to gather, remain present and discover what it means to watch, think and feel together.

From the hundreds of entries submitted this year, our National Competition Selection Committee has compiled a thrilling programme. In the 25 short films, including ten animated works, our national filmmakers are pursuing new narratives and aesthetics, letting old worlds implode and revealing new spaces for characters and stories. With fantastical animals and fairy-tale characters encountering dystopian scenarios and existential crises, AI nightmares and travels through time, media-archaeological discoveries, a utopian dance musical, fruit flies, exercises to procrastinate more effectively and New Year’s Eve in a different Palestine. Rarely has the National Competition been so multilayered, wondrous and resonant.
Settle down in your cinema seats as the lights dim and the curtain rises – and let the show begin! May we invite you to partake in this transfusion of lifeblood, as you become infected with our passion for short films and it takes your very breath away. But have no fear, be not afraid – for it is all magic!

COLD CALL is an essayistic documentary that also serves as a link to the festival’s thematic focus on “Work in Progress”. It explores digital vigilantism, global labour structures and inequality, as well as a criminal phenomenon known as scamming, one that only reveals its implications at second glance and prompts the viewers to question hasty judgments about who the perpetrators are. The short film THE WEIGHT OF ALL THINGS explores the inner life of its young protagonist and is concerned with the immense strain of care work that pushes a young woman – who has just completed secondary school and should be enjoying her life – to her limits. NEITHER FISH NOR FOWL is a poetic documentary about a domesticated cow’s escape into the wilderness, inspiring reflection on the boundaries between nature and culture and questioning our concepts of freedom, care and control. LOVE YOUR NAILS! is a partially AI-generated film that plays with reversed gender roles to question history, visibility and social codes. UNNOTICED DEATH follows a team of crime scene cleaners as they clean the apartment of a person who died alone, reminding us of how an entire life can often vanish without witnesses or traces. A DAUGHTER AND TEN SONS portrays young adults searching for their own path in life between the post-Soviet present day and the promises of the American Dream. Finally, the music video ZERSPLITTER DEIN GLAS combines self-reflections on intimacy, insecurity and emotional turmoil with a melancholic groove to create an intense (tonal) experience.

The difficulties faced by working mothers, the exhausting reality of the “second shift” and the ethical complications of outsourcing domestic labour to a low paid, predominately immigrant workforce all feature prominently too, reminding us of the enduring relevance of second-wave feminist arguments about the need to place greater value on “women’s work”. Yet despite the potential weight of the subject matter, these films also serve as a wonderful showcase for shortform filmmaking in all its resourceful creativity, embracing a range of documentary, analogue and animation techniques to visually reflect the diversity of perspectives on display here.
By focusing on work done by women filmmakers, “… What a Way to Make a Living!” is also built on a subtextual meta-reflection about the way female artistic labour has, like so much “women’s work” often been belittled and sidelined within the history of film. The shorts here include work performed solo, in partnership and as part of collectives. It includes examples of work by filmmakers who would build large bodies of work, as well as by those whose filmmaking was cut short by the painful realities of the industry.
Ultimately, this programme hopes to place a polyphony of women’s voices at the centre of the screen. While there are no easy answers here, this approach does at least allow us to briefly down tools, pause and take a moment to celebrate the many unseen women whose largely invisible labour has made our presence here in the cinema today possible.

The six films consider work not as some economic category, but as a sensory experience, an ordering principle for the visible and the invisible. Work emerges here as an ordering force: It structures spaces, determines rhythms, assigns specific gestures to bodies and transforms gestures into functions.
With differing geographical, historical and formal contexts, the films explore how work becomes inscribed into people’s existences. They examine how work organises time, allocates spaces, regulates rhythms and moulds bodies. Work appears less like an action here, and more so as a sensitive structure: as a modus for drawing the line between the utterable and the unutterable. Yet even within this order, anomalies become visible – forms of resistance, of slowing down, of safeguarding lived experiences.
In MARTA, the repetitive hand movements of a Polish textile worker create a temporal structure determined entirely by necessity. The work extends beyond the production process, seeping into her private sphere and narrowing her horizon to this ceaseless repetition. The narrative does not focus on the occurrences as such and instead captures the wear-and-tear aspects. Fatigue assumes a shape – as a form, a duration, a state.
IN PRAISE OF SLOWNESS casts a light on occupations that are at risk of disappearing. In this context, slowness acquires a special significance: it restores depth to gestures and establishes a relationship with a world that evades measurability on purely productive terms. Work unfolds here as a presence, an awareness, as being inscribed into life.
In 所有动作都应杀死风 (ALL MOVEMENTS SHOULD KILL THE WIND) and FROM ECUADOR WITH LOVE, gestures repeat themselves to the point of vanishing. Whether working with stone or cultivating roses – it seems as though human labour is being absorbed by the material, by nature, or by some industrial logic.
INVENTORY effects a shift in the perspective on architecture and collective memory. The demolition of a modernist building makes visible the demise of a historical project. The workers involved in its dismantling are part of this transformation: the material crumbles – and with it, the narrative it once embodied. With the labour thus becoming a medium for a symbolic reconfiguration.
By contrast, KRAHËT E PUNËTORËVE radically narrows this scope. The focus here is no longer on the collective memory, but on the physical inscriptions on humans. Bodies scarred by accidents serve as a reminder that the work itself does not disappear when the activity as such ends. The discontinued gesture continues to inscribe itself into human flesh. While INVENTORY depicts the disintegration of history, KRAHËT E PUNËTORËVE makes an ineradicable trace visible.
These films pose an aesthetic and political question in the most concrete sense: Who has a right to time, to visibility, to utterance? And what remains of these gestures when the production ends, yet their traces persist?

Taking this backdrop of profound upheavals being moulded by big data and digital technologies as they reshape the realities of both work and life, the films selected provide analytical, critical and speculative access to the shifting dynamics between productivity, control and self-determination. They reveal how data-driven infrastructures not only transform economic processes but also reconfigure social relationships, ecological interconnections and individual spheres of experience – and how new forms of subjective responsibility, control and dependency are articulated within them.

Our home and homeland can also be found within a possibility, a utopia. In Hansol Kim’s music video K-BOB STAR, for instance, the grandmother and housewife Young-E Son is transformed into a virtual pop star. With a meal playing a major role in this, as a ritual like no other connected to the Korean home and homeland. Ely Dagher’s animated work WAVES ’98 is a moving meditation on the contradiction of feeling lost in one’s own homeland while hoping for a better future. Alejo Franzetti’s dreamlike fiction film THE WHOLE NIGHT explores social, mental and spatial homes and sketches the situation of a woman who, in the face of hostility, defends her belonging to a culture with self-confidence and stands her ground. L’AVANCE by Djiby Kebe focuses on a relational home, on complex family relationships and obligations, revealing that the desire for financial and social advancement is not always compatible with them.
Nature can be a great mosaic tile in our sense of a home and homeland. The Anthropocene, an era in which humans have become the central force shaping nature through their profound incursions, also influences our concept of the homeland. The essay film SUN UNDER GROUND from Alex Gerbaulet and Mareike Bernien is a deep drill through space and time into the historic waste dumps of East Germany left behind from the uranium mining undertaken there in the GDR era by the mining company Wismut.

It opens with RIGA’S LILAC, where seemingly casual conversations about smell unfold into unexpectedly revealing encounters. Between anxious citizens, overconfident authorities and passing strangers, testimonies show how something as intangible as scent can carry embarrassment, humour and quiet vulnerability.
In CAN’T HELP MYSELF, the search for connection drifts along the Baltic coast. While selling ice cream, a young woman immerses herself in guided affirmations and fragments of overheard conversations, rehearsing intimacy in a landscape saturated with advice, doubt and longing.
A darker form of routine shapes CLEANLINESS. While it is a humorous portrait of an office worker obsessed with hygiene, the film reveals a more fragile emotional reality where carefully maintained rituals hint at deeper anxieties and dependencies.
Turning toward the cinema itself, 81 METERS enters Latvia’s last surviving movie theatres during the pandemic in 2021. Shot on Super 8, the film reflects on the vulnerability of physical cinema spaces and the collective memories they continue to hold.
Questions of discipline and duty surface in GUARD OF HONOUR, where a ceremonial military routine persists even as a natural disaster disrupts it. The simple act of remaining at one’s post becomes both absurd and quietly poignant.
Finally, WHERE DOES THE SUN SLEEP AT NIGHT imagines the modern workplace as a surreal corporate mythology. In windowless offices populated by weary managers and accountants, strange rituals and fragments of folklore emerge as ways of coping with the monotony of contemporary labour.
Across these works, humour, melancholy and quiet absurdity intertwine. Together they portray a present in which people create routines, stories and small gestures of care – ways of grounding themselves and making sense of everyday life. In moments of uncertainty, these habits become tools for resilience, helping us navigate a world shaped not only by personal doubt but also by the pressures and anxieties of the current moment. The films gently remind us that being human means continually searching for connection, meaning and stability, even when the wider world feels unsettled.

Commencing with a resolutely non-Western perspective, she aims – with great formal audacity – to challenge and transform canonical knowledge. A central element of her work consists of her engagement with already existing visual material: Archival footage, amateur films and found footage from colonial and popular cultural visual worlds become transformed into precise filmic essays through montage, texts, animation and voice-overs. Through this, the archive becomes a location for the political reclaiming of the experiences and perspectives of marginalised groups who would remain invisible otherwise.
On a formal level, Mistry’s cinema is characterised by its great openness: Documentary, experimental and essayistic elements blend together seamlessly, with the rhythm, sound and language playing just as central a role as the image itself. Her works reveal a poetic structure less driven by storytelling and more concerned with making trains of thought visible – while continually questioning the ideological structures of seeing itself. For it is in this compaction that the unique power of the short form is found, one that Mistry avails of repeatedly as a space for formal freedom and critical interventions.
In addition to works that have already been screened at festivals and in exhibition settings, FILMFEST DRESDEN is also presenting a world premiere in this tribute to her. The masterclass, which is part of the tribute, is providing a deeper insight into the works of Jyoti Mistry.

Juicy is also the cue for two welders observing an astral phenomenon during their lunch break. Faced with the sublime, they lower their masks – even when the sun is out. And speaking of masks: has anyone ever thought about a rescue dummy’s feelings? Behind its fixed smile, a whirlwind of emotions floods its plastic carcass, especially when forgotten at the bottom of a swimming pool. How sweet it would be to be picked up and lifted to the surface in the strong and reassuring arms of a swimmer…
Could this swimmer be Pubert Jimbob? Not yet. First, he has to come to the rescue of Nadine, a lump with a mouth, after being lured away from his beloved sofa by an enigmatic figure who throws him a lighter. Candela, on the other hand, probably should have stayed on hers. Instead, she accidentally runs over her nephew’s dog – on his birthday of all days. So, rather than confess, she invents a legend about a dog pilgrimage to a sacred tree.
And, as we all know, lies travel surprisingly far, at least until the post-internet age has fully arrived. In our wild world, ordinary people are called wolves and persecuted as useless and dangerous, while in reality, they are just adorable cats living their everyday lives. In the end, nobody agrees on what is real – the eclipse, the pilgrimage, the wolves or the cats – but the pineapple keeps growing, which is as good a system of truth as any.

From the end of the 1950s, during Nikita Khrushchev’s policy known as the “thaw”, the first amateur film groups were allowed in the Soviet Union. At that time, Latvia was one of the hotspots for this increasingly popular free-time activity. By 1970, the number of amateur film clubs in Latvia had grown to more than 40. Most of the films were shot in the semi-professional 16mm format – which provided a higher technical quality than 8mm, as well as the option to add subsequent soundtracks and dubbing. At the latest from the mid-1960s, however, there were always individuals or small groups who dared to go a little further than the strict culture policy and legal regulations then permitted. With the exploration of Latvia’s autonomous ethnic history, for instance, playing a critical role here in defining its identity. Likewise, environmental protections and the hardships of everyday life were important themes.
Being watched and observed by the KGB was part of everyday life at that time. Some pioneers of this scene were reprimanded, with footage being confiscated or destroyed by the auteurs themselves out of fear. Despite this, a body of invaluable works has been preserved for the future. The Latvian cultural historian Dr. Inese Strupule especially has made a significant contribution in this regard to researching and classifying these works within European film history. The preserved and partially restored works are now part of the national Latvian cultural heritage and can be found in the Latvian National Archives in Riga, where they are available to the public.
Our selection consists of 15 productions made between 1966 and 1989, including fictional and documentary works, as well as animated and experimental films. They are now being shown in Germany for the first time. The programme was curated by Dr. Elīna Reitere and Dr. Claus Löser, who will also attend and comment on the screenings. The research work on and preparation of the films for screening purposes occurred in close cooperation with Sanita Grīna from the Latvian National Archives in Riga.

The birth of cinema also coincided with a time when the world of work was undergoing fundamental changes. There was heated debate at that time about how these changes might and indeed would shape society’s ideals and values. We now find ourselves in a period of upheaval yet again, one that is making a new and even more rapid structural transformation visible to everyone and tangible in all areas of life.
The festival’s “Work in Progress” thematic focus programmes are intended to reflect this world of work “in progress”. This year’s retrospective is casting a light on working people and their lifeworlds from the second half of the 20th century to the present day. It consists of a filmic journey highlighting building culture and places of work, one that takes us from West German supermarkets via the proletarian East German GDR countryside to the wide expanses of Europe. Doing so we become immersed in the laconic, whimsical cosmos of Aki Kaurismäki and descend into the mines of Sicily; we encounter relics of the German economic miracle era and discover a creative hub where living and working spaces are being combined in an almost utopian way.

This programme reflects that legacy, from the pioneering animated character Mish‑Mish to contemporary shorts that span folklore, social satire, poetic reflection and imaginative futures.
NATIONAL DEFENCE (1939, Egypt) captures the playful patriotic spirit of Mish‑Mish Effendi, one of the continent’s earliest animated figures, who in this film will lead the national army against the Nazis arriving in Egypt in the late 1930s. BON VOYAGE, SIM (1966, Niger) invites us on a satirical journey of a frog president, showcasing post‑independence creativity. THE WOMAN WHO MARRIED THREE MEN (1993, Burkina Faso, Canada) reimagines a folktale of choice and agency, while MINE (1991, South Africa) by William Kentridge confronts the dehumanisation of apartheid with expressive, handmade animation.
Contemporary voices shine through SHADOW OF THE BUTTERFLIES (2022, Morocco, Portugal), a dreamlike meditation on memory. THE PYRAMID (2021, Egypt) mixes wit with ancient imagination. SHOUT SHOUT, LET IT ALL OUT (2006, South Africa) offers playful absurdity, and TOTO’S JOURNEY (2005, Kenya) reflects daily life in motion. ILM, THE KNOWLEDGE (2008, Madagascar) grapples with difference and belonging, while BLACK BARBIE (2016, Ghana) critically explores beauty ideals. Closing with KIZAZI MOTO: STARDUST (2023, Egypt, South Africa), an Afro‑futurist tale of destiny and transformation, this selection highlights animation’s power to depict Africa’s past, present and future.
Together, these films tell a story of innovation and cultural resurgence, a testament to African storytellers who have reclaimed the animated image and expanded its expressive possibilities across decades.

The first film in the programme, PIDIKWE, is already an audio-visual whirlwind that, in a sense, reverses the exploitation of the indigenous female body by the colonial gaze. The film by the Franco-Canadian filmmaker and artist Caroline Monnet offers these women the opportunity to regain control over their image and embark on a process of self-determination.
Sasha Pirker’s EVERYONE DESERVES A SLICE OF THE PIE is a surreal collage that celebrates the subversive nature of cinema, drawing inspiration from slapstick films from the early days of cinema and demanding that we take a stand in the here-and-now in the fight for our future.
WINNER by the multidisciplinary artist Marianna Simnett takes us into a hallucinatory world reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick’s CLOCKWORK ORANGE as it playfully dissects power hierarchies and mass psychology in soccer. Triumph and defeat, suffering and brutality, play and escalation are all juxtaposed to each other here.
BLIND, INTO THE EYE by Atefeh Kheirabadi and Mehrad Sepahniai is a documentary that sheds light on the brutal repression carried out by the Revolutionary Guards and security forces against peaceful protesters in Iran. In light of the events since late February 2026 and after the tyrannical murders there, Iran is now facing an uncertain future. All that remains is the hope for justice and freedom for the people.
AT NIGHT from Anouk Chambaz oscillates between darkness and light, dreaming and wakefulness, the unknown and the familiar, memory and imagination – that in-between state in which films are also experienced in the cinema.
THE END by Claudia Larcher is an AI-generated ironically dystopian vision of the future of cinema. Nicolaas Schmidt’s LINEAR ENDJOY fuses together the (technological) past and the socio-cultural present once more, bringing the programme to a close.

The programme merges fictional horror, queer formal experiments and animation into a boundary-pushing, neon-coloured feverish dream brimming with dark humour and visual excesses. Since the dawn of cinema, villains and monsters from Frankenstein to Dracula have often been queer coded: malevolently others, serving as projections of fear and fascination, yet morally condemned by a heteronormative society. The films in this programme thwart these attributions to reclaim the monstrous and celebrate it in a riot of colour. Characters turn against their authors and expose the violence of normative narratives. Melting, divergent and hybrid bodies experience transformations as both dysphoric horror and liberation. The act of filmmaking itself becomes part of the narratives. Its limitations and contradictions flow into the narratives and make the struggle for queer empowerment perceptible: with animated laboratories, mystical heroines, sex toys brought to life and acts of revenge in the movie theatre. Obsessive sensuality, camp and stylisation become combined to form a liberated, resistant language.
With a focus on queer French Extremity and current voices in British, Spanish and Taiwanese cinema, this programme invites the audiences to experience queer monstrosity as a contemporary cinematic force: hungry, devouring of norms and transformative.

We have Ernst Hirsch to thank for the fact that so many of these works have been preserved. The Dresden-based cinematographer, documentary filmmaker and director amassed a vast collection of historical films about Dresden in his private archive, the oldest of which date back to 1903. But it was not only his passion for collecting that earned Ernst Hirsch the nickname “The Eye of Dresden”. At the age of nine, he witnessed the city’s destruction, before he then personally documented its reconstruction with his film camera. He created numerous documentary records of Dresden’s works of art and the artists who worked here, yet he also did not shy away from subjects that were shameful to the people of Dresden, such as the “Jewish camp” at Heller.
Part of Ernst Hirsch’s archive was already digitalised in 2018 by the Saxon State Library – Dresden State and University Library (SLUB) and the Saxon Film Association during the pilot phase of their mutual SAVE (Securing the Audio-Visual Heritage in Saxony) Programme launched to preserve such material. Last year, SLUB and the Dresden City Museum acquired Hirsch’s entire film and camera footage collection in order to preserve it for future generations and make it accessible to the public. A small compilation from a total of more than 400 film reels is now being screened in Filmfest Dresden’s “Regional Focus” section to mark Ernst Hirsch’s upcoming 90th birthday. The focus here is on historical archival material from the period before 1945, supplemented by the filmmaker’s own footage of the reconstruction of the Zwinger palatial complex, the Dresden Catholic Cathedral and today’s Wilsdruffer Straße from the 1950s and 60s, as well as the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) from the 1990s. The film footage, some of which is silent, is set to live music performed by Johannes Gerstengarbe.

Before the screening begins on Wednesday, the Saxon Film Association is inviting all the guests to a small free-of-charge reception.

Sound design is thus far more than mere acoustic accompaniment. It is a narrative power, a source of rhythm, a resonant space. Sounds create transitions, set counterpoints and reveal imaginary spaces beyond the visible. They model proximity and distance, making the intimate audible and the invisible tangible. It is not uncommon for the sound to set the dramatic tone of a film – sometimes quietly and subtly, at other times radically and “sound-breaking”.
These works have been created for the cinema auditoria, for the space where the soundscape can be experienced physically. This is where, ideally speaking, these films should be screened and received – and of course it is where our pre-jury and jury members also viewed the nominated works. By awarding the Golden Horseman Sound Design, the jury consisting of Alma Weber, Eyup Kuş und Eduardo Mamede is honouring an outstanding artistic achievement, as well as unique creativity and the highest quality in the film auditory area.
At the screening for the Golden Horseman Sound Design, that is being sponsored by the Ballroom Studios, up to ten films are being shown to the public. They have been selected by a pre-jury consisting of young musicians from all of the competition entries as being especially distinctive, innovative and impressive in terms of their soundscapes. Get ready for a programme that opens your ears, challenges your listening habits and shows you just how powerful cinema can sound!

In this Storytelling Café occasion, the focus is on the long-overlooked work apron and the women who wear it. Everyone with memories of smocked aprons are welcome to come along and share their stories – or just listen. Feel free to bring photos with you related to this work wear —or even the aprons themselves.
Free admission, the event is being held in German. If you are interested, please register online at stmd.de, or with the visitor services of the Dresden City Museum: 0351 488 7272 (Mon – Fri).
The event is connected to the festival’s “Work in Progress” focal theme and expands upon the Dresden City Museum’s special programme “Pre-Fab EAST/WEST: Building and Living in Prefabricated High-Rises”.
The afternoon event is being presented by Stefanie Reis, a cultural scientist and smocked apron researcher who has intensively scrutinised aprons and their significance as memory fabrics – such as in her podcast “In an apron with …”, the world’s first ever podcast on this subject.
The Storytelling Café is kindly sponsored by Eisenfeustel – a traditional shop in Dresden-Neustadt brimming with high-quality items for the kitchen, bathroom, home and garden. In April 2026, the shop is celebrating its 105th year in business on Bautzner Straße – where it is now located in number 51. Over the years, the Eisenfeustel shop has faced changes with a timeless dependability. And for decades, two legendary sisters wearing identical smocked aprons ran the Eisenfeustel shop.

But even after the demise of the music television era, the music video still has a future, and that on the cinematic silver screens. The latest music videos vibrate between commercialism and cult, between trash and art, between AI and analogue film. Our programme is screening classics, showcasing the stars of tomorrow and combining local and international (music) video art.
The programme venue consists of the former ASTORIA ballroom, which as a building is being refurbished and reinvented to become a cultural hub. Before the ASTORIA officially opens as a venue for films, concerts and special events, FILMFEST DRESDEN is celebrating the premiere of the ASTORIA Music Film Night here – in cooperation with the FILM NIGHTS ON THE BANKS OF THE ELBE.

In an era when the social order around the world is undergoing tangible changes, “The Currency Lab – Law & Order” is posing fundamental questions: Which concepts of law and order shape our present time? Which historical continuities still have an impact – from existing power relations to social structures through to global interdependencies? And how can we counter these developments with alternative, solidarity-based and future-driven practices?
The Currency Lab – Law & Order is a project of the C.Rockefeller Center for the Contemporary Arts in cooperation with Filmfest Dresden, Netzwerk Medien Kunst and geh8.

Information about trigger warnings
FILMFEST DRESDEN publishes trigger warnings to point out particularly violent images and content. We are aware that triggers are very individual, so we focus on content that is likely to have a triggering effect on some people. Trigger warnings are used when there are explicit depictions in the film and/or the violent content is part of the main storyline.
Consequently, a corresponding warning cannot be guaranteed for all content that could have a disturbing effect, but the synopses of the films (which can be found, among other things, in the online programme) usually indicate the respective thematic focus. Furthermore, trigger warnings can be shown for every film concerned in our online programme. Please send questions and feedback to festival@filmfest-dresden.de.
