During FILMFEST DRESDEN, the Saxon Film Association together with ŁUŽYCAFILM, the Sorbian-German film network, and the Foundation for the Sorbian People are inviting all those interested to attend the “Wiźeś.Visible.Widźomne” film programme in the Lingnerschloss venue. The intention is to critically discuss which contribution “Serbska utopija I and II”, a fictional collage of six highly different short films, has made to the development of Sorbian filmmaking.
SERBSKA UTOPIJA I
In the ethno-futuristic film plot framing NOWY SWĚT | A NEW WORLD by Erik Schiesko (director) and Clemens Schiesko (cinematographer), three women from the future look back on alternative present-day Sorbian scenarios. In DNJOWNIK | THE DIARY, the filmmaker Dirk Lienig describes the loss of the Sorbian language for future generations. In SERBSKI TELEWIZOR | SORBIAN TELEVISION, directors Hella Stoletzki and Karoline Schneider explore the mind game for having Sorbian mainstream television. In SERBSKY BRATŽY | SORBISH BROTHERS, director Erik Schiesko, cameraman Roman Pernack and actor Stephan Göbel consider the extent to which the Sorbian language can be marketed and, especially, by whom.
SERBSKA UTOPIJA II (Director’s Cut)
In WĚŠĆENJE | THE PROPHECY by Erik and Clemens Schiesko, the second work framing the film plot, a grandmother and her granddaughter embark on a journey through the legendary Lusatia of earlier times. The short films also deal with Sorbian legends and myths. In PLAPOTAŔKA | BLABBERMOUTH, the team led by cinematographer Roman Pernack and director Ugur Yildrim focus on the legend of the midday woman. In WÓTLEW A PŚILEW | EBB AND FLOW, the director Sophia Ziesch interprets the legend of the waterman in the style of a mockumentary. The animator Michał Barylski and his team awakens the silhouette character from its slumbers in KRABAT 3000.
Please register for the event by email to m.mager@filmverband-sachsen.de
Free admission, in German and Sorbian
After the screenings and film discussions, there is an opportunity for exchanges and networking over cold drinks at the Saxon Film Association’s get-together from 18:00 in the lovely ambience of the Lingnerschloss’s Sternensaal.
From 19:00, the Saxon Film Association and the Saxon State Library – Dresden State and University Library (SLUB) are, like in previous years and as part of the “Regional Focus” section, screening excerpts from their joint SAVE (Securing the Audio-Visual Heritage in Saxony) project programme digitalising and preserving the audio-visual heritage in Saxony. This year, the programme series is dedicated to the Sorbian cinematic heritage.

A festival is not separate from these realities. It exists within them, shaped by the same forces it seeks to examine. If not a solution, a festival can be a space for reckoning. It can hold contradictions, discomfort, and the urgent need for dialogue. We step into this space with questions rather than answers, hoping to create a place where uncertainty is not a weakness but a force that drives us toward new understandings.
To present films is not just to showcase stories – it is to take a position, whether consciously or not. What is seen and what is left unseen matters. This selection does not offer closure or resolution. It is a collection of works that challenges perception and opens new ways of looking at the world. If “what can be” is not only a question of the future, but of the present, these films invite us to shift our perspective now – to engage, listen, and reconsider.

Yet again this year, the viewing process was exciting and exhaustive, the selection endeavours cordial and hard fought, and the programme structure comparable to a sliding puzzle. But in the end we embedded 24 short films, included 12 animated works, in four amazing competition blocks. The films reflect current social conflicts and highly personal stories from the freshest of angles and perspectives, with the range of themes, genres, styles and creative forms enormous, and it all a revelation of how the current generation of German filmmakers is mining short film as an artistic medium.
May we invite you on a voyage through the wonderous worlds of local German filmmaking, through yearnings and wanderlust, realities and dreams, sensuality and delirium, when the curtains open and the silver screen comes to life.

The animation DETLEV by Ferdinand Ehrhardt shows that sometimes we just long for a little warmth, and that simple rituals are what give us support. The essay film THERE ARE MANY DOORS IN MY MOTHER’S APARTMENTS by David Kind deals with the processing of experiences related to violence and resilience. The doors in the film’s title to the traumas in the past are opened and scrutinised with great care.
In the unusual love story ALTERING EGO by Casper Michel Wallrabe, the audience is drawn into a fascinating game of deception as certainties are called into question. Sophie Mühe’s SOCIAL CLUB may be a soccer film, but it focuses on the sidelines. She accompanies the Chemnitz soccer club Athletik Sonnenberg that makes a clear stand against right-wing extremism, as well as advocating inclusion and solidarity.
THE MALE GAZE RECIPE is the filmic adaptation of an unusual dream that ruptures gender stereotypes and the dominance of the “male gaze” in art history and in our everyday lives in an original way. In HELA ET AL., Tess Marschner reflects on reproductive bodies and impressively combines science with cinematic art.
In CONCRETE WHISPER, Jannis Lenz uses the “cadavre exquis”, or exquisite corpse, a playful method developed in surrealism to explore the creation of urban myths. Nina Hoffmann breaks down the boundaries between lustful fantasies and grey everyday life in WELCOME TO SEXY as she invites us all to join in the fun.

This programme is based on my observations of language-related films, also a reflection of my own life—how I’ve spoken, or failed to speak. In 2010, Anna Sophie Loewenberg was my flatmate in Beijing; her iconic webcast “Sexy Beijing”, known for its witty street interviews, opened windows for many audiences. Our relationship also deepened my own interest in intercultural communication. A decade later, in 2020, I documented a racist attack against me during the Covid pandemic in Berlin. In that moment, I found myself unable to defend myself—not because I lacked words, but because language itself failed me. It was only through the short video LERNE DEUTSCH IN MEINER KÜCHE that I was able to reclaim my voice, and the expression made me stronger. It proves that poison can be turned into medicine.
At a time when freedom of speech is under threat and fake news floods everywhere, words remain fundamental. We need to speak out and stay in touch! And believe it or not—even in silence, we remain connected, because our tongues can be united.
This programme is also a tribute to the Soura Film Festival in Berlin—not only because I discovered EVERYTHING IS EASY, EVERYTHING IS HARD there, but because the festival itself stands as a model for communication and exchange.

This program shatters that mirror with five films that capture the complexity and humanity of Roma lives across the continent. For centuries, Roma people have faced systemic discrimination—denied access to housing, health care, education, and work, and too often subjected to forced evictions, racist violence, and police brutality. Yet their voices, long marginalized, refuse to be erased.
Sejad Ademaj’s drama 15 MINUTES follows a German-Roma teenager whose ordinary evening turns into a nightmare of imminent deportation. Abel Santa’s OMARA celebrates Hungarian Roma painter Mara Olah, whose vibrant canvases and indomitable spirit transformed hostility into creative triumph. In Spain, Irene Baque’s CARMEN, NO FEAR OF FREEDOM documents a groundbreaking feminist Roma organization fighting both racism and patriarchy.
The program confronts injustice head-on with JUSTICE, where Sifonios and Baraj give voice to a family seeking truth after a police killing in Greece. Hamze Bytyci’s animated NONCIA recovers a forgotten history of Roma resistance.
These films are not just stories—they are acts of defiance, reclamations of truth, and calls to action.

In this anthropological study you will get an introduction to the Swedish species. The country is inhabited by a broad variety of characters with their own quirks and views of Sweden – and the world. You will meet the women of Sweden: strong women standing up for their rights, women who might push their power to excess and who keep searching for balance and inner peace throughout their lives. And you will meet the Swedish men: The young men looking for love and direction in life. The middle-aged men looking for meaning and redemption and the old man looking for death.
The programmes will hopefully give you an insight into the complex soul of the Swedes and give you something to ponder, some laughs and maybe also a tear or two on the way.

“C the unseen” is the motto of the European Capital of Culture campaign – a challenge that can also be applied to the programme selection. The tribute provides an insight into the entire range of Filmworkshop productions from over three decades, tracing milestones, generational changes and upheavals. Many projects have been achieved in cooperation with local artists, institutions and festivals. Even in the early documentary ALFREDSTRAßE, SUMMER 1992, today’s rap star Trettmann can be seen. SEEVEN, the first national and international festival success from the Filmworkshop, was made in collaboration with local Chemnitz theatres and with the involvement of Carsten Nicolai (known as “Alva Noto”). Overall, the Chemnitz Filmworkshop has fostered many greats who have become integral to the German (short) film landscape, as can be seen in the other selections. This represents a further way in which the Filmworkshop is contributing to the diversity and visibility of Saxony’s film culture. At the start of the European Capital of Culture year, the German Federal Minister of Culture Claudia Roth stated that the “cultural heart” of 2025 was beating in Chemnitz. And this tribute proves that it has not only been the case since this year.

"There Is No Alternative" the title that is associated with Mrs Thatcher and her government slowly eroded ideals and ridiculed dreams. The devotees of the stock market took over the grand narrative, and while, in the distance, the echo of an ethic still rang out, in which the awareness that human dignity and social justice went through channels other than those of capitalism, states were transformed into corporations. The rich were once again playing at being the motor of the world, while the underprivileged were once again blamed for their poverty. The politics of charity returned to whitewash consciences. And meanwhile, democracy was quietly fading away. Retrieving Schopenhauer's title „Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung“, I would like to confirm that the world can be desired and represented in a different way. It is never too late.

I also believe that the 7th art has real political power to shift mentalities, open hearts, and spark dialogue. The encounter with the audience who receives our works is a true privilege.
Art is one thing, but the film industry is something else. We try to merge a machine with emotions. The birth of a film is complex, even for a short! Especially a short film! It’s the poor child trying to carve out a place in the big leagues. But I’m also a feminist and I dream of a world where everyone finds their place. A striking example: since the creation of the Cannes Film Festival in 1946, only two female directors have won the prestigious Palme d’Or, and in more than 90 years of history, only one female director has won the Oscar for Best Picture.
That’s why I decided to give real meaning to my role as a guest curator and amplify the voices of female directors, through a diversity of styles, genres, and backgrounds… The power of image, voice, equality, and space for women on the big screen is more crucial than ever in a time when male dominance is on the rise in high spheres. I want this moment of cinema to be a breath of hope and sweetness.

The films in the "Experiments" program serve as both a documentation of the crisis and an antidote. They ask questions, open up new perspectives, convey the sublimity of nature, and take us on a journey through time and space to mysterious places made sensually tangible through cinematic means. Above all, they warn of apocalyptic scenarios and imagine utopias.
The overwhelming beauty we perceive makes us even more aware of the danger our planet is in—its vulnerability laid bare. These films call for mindfulness toward a nature that is not passive, that cannot be controlled by humans, that responds to human actions and makes their consequences visible. Awareness of the severity of the situation is high; now, it is time to act urgently—also in solidarity with future generations.

Even today, the culture and history of the Sorbians are not very evident beyond their settlement areas in Brandenburg and Saxony. However, one of their legendary figures can be found in German literary classics – Otfried Preußler’s “Krabat” character, who probably still remains the only encounter with the Sorbian culture for many Germans.
While the Sorbians were still in the majority in many villages of Lusatia until 1945, they increasingly became a minority in their old settlement areas a few years later with the settlement of refugees from the former German eastern territories there and the mass influx of workers into the lignite-mining region. The Sorbian languages of Lower and Upper Sorbian was in danger of dying out, while their traditions and customs were increasingly becoming folklore in the wake of the GDR’s “exemplary” minority policy.
In the “Regional Focus” event, the Saxon State Library – Dresden State and University Library (SLUB) and the Saxony Film Association are, in the context of their joint SAVE (Securing the Audio-Visual Heritage in Saxony) digitalisation programme to preserve this filmic heritage, presenting historical film footage from Lusatia that was digitalised in cooperation with the Sorbian Institute. On the one hand, these include recordings of Sorbian traditions that were still being lived authentically, while on the other hand they reveal the ever-increasing process of folklorisation there.
With the Sorbian-German film network Łužycafilm, the Saxony Film Association and SLUB have now been joined by a further expert partner on Lusatian film heritage. Together, the three of them have curated a programme with documentary material on the early days of Sorbian filmmaking, focusing on the cultural traditions of the Sorbians – especially in the areas of music and dance.
The mainly silent film footage is being set to live music by the Sorbian musician Paul Geigerzähler, who is building a bridge to the present with his own unique interpretation of the musical traditions. Theresa Jacobs and Dr. Robert Lorenz from the Sorbian Institute, which has been able to preserve an extensive collection of historical film footage with a Sorbian connection for today’s viewers, were responsible for the categorising and classification of the ethnographic and (film) historical aspects.
Prior to the screening on Wednesday, the Saxony Film Association is inviting all guests to a small free-of-charge reception.
Note on all films: * There are no reliable designations for the director: The functions that Hanka Faßke and Kurt Heine had during the film shooting is not clearly documented to a large extent.

In this regard, LUCA is setting a clear example for the acceptance of all genders and sexual orientations, against sexism and all forms of discrimination. The commitment demonstrated here in this form is virtually unique within the festival scene, and especially in the short film area. The nominated films visualise differing ways of living and loving, show the strength of love, acceptance and solidarity, and advocate living self-determined lives. At the same time, stereotyping and various experiences of violence that women* and men* have had, as well as the experiences of people with multiple sexual identities are also thematised.
Representatives from the Saxon Gender Competence Centre, the LAG Jungen- und Männerarbeit Sachsen e. V. boys and men’s advocacy association in Saxony and the LAG Queeres Netzwerk Sachsen e. V. queer Saxon network have acted as a pre-jury and selected the films. They are attending the film discussion after the screening together with the main jury of the LUCA GenderDiversity Film Award and are happy to answer any questions from the audience.

In this way, “fully political” accords consideration to current developments that reveal in numerous places: Politics makes waves, is life, is daily routine. For which reason, political education and information about political systems and developments are required more than ever across broad areas and in numerous – even entertaining – formats. The “‘fully political’ – Short Film Award for Democratic Culture” provides the space and framing required for this.
The “‘fully political’ – Short Film Award for Democratic Culture” was developed by the Saxon State Centre for Political Education (SLpB) and first awarded in 2020 during Filmfest Dresden. This year, the Saxon State Ministry for Social Welfare, Health and Social Cohesion is sponsoring the award.
Five players from the political education and culture field were involved in the viewing and evaluation of the short films. They undertook a preselection of the most interesting films politically speaking from all of the competition entries to FILMFEST DRESDEN.
After the screening, a film discussion is being held with filmmakers and members of the preselection jury. The public are invited to join in the discussion.

SHORT TIGER NEXT GENERATION 2025 consists of a selection of the best productions from German film schools and young directors. The jury members Thea Ehre (Silver Bear at the 2023 Berlinale for her acting performance in TILL THE END OF THE NIGHT), Alexandra Gramatke (managing director of the KurzFilmAgentur Hamburg short film agency) and Andreas Heidenreich (Kommunales Kino Weiterstadt cinema and board member of the Bundesverband kommunale Filmarbeit film association) have included eleven films in the selection this year and chosen five SHORT TIGER 2025 winners.
The short film prize sponsored by the FFA is endowed with €5,000 and awarded to the winners for the preparation or production of a new film. The aim of the initiative is to strengthen the perception of short film in the public domain and increase their cinematic screenings. The filmmakers receive a platform to present their works throughout the year in cinemas here in Germany, as well as at media industry events abroad.
We are delighted that numerous filmmakers are attending the screening. After the premiere, GERMAN FILMS is sending the films on an international tour, with the first stop-off being the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025. The five FFA SHORT TIGER winners can be booked by German cinemas via the interfilm Berlin short film agency.

Yet again, our team of curators has compiled the usual variety – one as varied as the April weather – of voices and moods for you. And of course there is also a connection to this year’s main theme of solidarity at the 37 FILMFEST DRESDEN.
Over and again, our programme selection considers potential and indeed better living environments for us, focuses on the desire for solutions rather than indignation, explores human potential and reveals that that acceptance of diversity and other opinions can create social cohesion and a sense of community.
The programme is not short on fun for our young audiences either. Our ever-popular Family Shorts programme will enthuse short film fans
from all age groups once more. There is so much to discover here – and just as much to discuss afterwards.
It goes without saying that FILMFEST DRESDEN cannot guarantee stable weather conditions in April. But what we can promise is the most wonderful big screen entertainment on our high-resolution and daylight-capable LED screen.
Free admission, but we are happy to receive your donations so that our Short Film Open Air event can also be held again next year.

The animation artist Mona Keil is commencing the event with a presentation, in which she is providing exciting insights into her career as a filmmaker. Mona studied visual communication in Weimar and animation in Ludwigsburg and now lives in Leipzig, where she is currently setting up a stop-motion studio. In her talk, she will show excerpts from earlier works and present her current project “Kitzel” - a stop-motion short film that is about to go into production and which she intends to make with her newly founded production company Animauz. She will also speak about her vision for establishing a stop-motion film scene in Leipzig and Central Germany, as well as other projects that are already in the pipeline. With her film JUICE, Mona Keil won the Golden Horseman in the Central German Competition at the 35th FILMFEST DRESDEN in 2023.
Afterwards, we cordially invite you to a cozy get-together in the bar area – the perfect opportunity to make new contacts, get to know like-minded people and exchange mutual projects and ideas. You can also talk to Mona in this relaxed atmosphere and delve deeper into the various topics.
We are looking forward to seeing you there.

Julian Janssen (“Checker Julian”) and Anna Shirin Habedank (“Invisible Sue”) are seeking answers to these and other questions in this animated documentary. Following in the footsteps of the award-winning animated character Fritzi (“Fritzi – A Revolutionary Tale”, “Fritzi and Sophie – Friendship without Borders”), they meet the people behind the events and immerse themselves as avatars in this time of the peaceful revolution.
Whether as a breakdancer, punk, environmentalist or evil Stasi type – they live first-hand as cartoon characters through the experiences of the contemporary witnesses, attending the Leipzig Monday demonstrations, fleeing the country via Hungary, or being arrested. For Julian, who grew up in the West, and Anna, whose parents come from the East, this trip to the end days of the GDR becomes an emotional journey through their own history.

The importance of further education and training programmes, as well as networking opportunities for the film industry in the region will be discussed with experts. How are the options and opportunities already provided here in Saxony and the Central German film and media region used and what impact do they have – especially for filmmakers in the region itself? How important is international networking for the filmmakers? Should more be invested in the expansion of existing structures in the future, or should the current options be better adapted to the everyday production conditions? Do we ultimately need completely new approaches? In addition to local projects, proven examples from other regions in Germany and beyond should also provide direction here. Following the discussion, the Dresden-based film institutes, AG Kurzfilm – German Short Film Association, Saxon Film Association, German Institute for Animated Film (DIAF), MOVE IT! Film Festival and FILMFEST DRESDEN, are together inviting everyone to a reception.

Information about trigger warnings
FILMFEST DRESDEN publishes trigger warnings to point out particularly violent images and content. We are aware that triggers are very individual, so we focus on content that is likely to have a triggering effect on some people. Trigger warnings are used when there are explicit depictions in the film and/or the violent content is part of the main storyline.
Consequently, a corresponding warning cannot be guaranteed for all content that could have a disturbing effect, but the synopses of the films (which can be found, among other things, in the online programme) usually indicate the respective thematic focus. Furthermore, trigger warnings can be shown for every film concerned in our online programme. Please send questions and feedback to festival@filmfest-dresden.de.
