DESCRIPTION:If you know it\, then it won’t leave you cold: the smocked apron. This self-evident symbol of everyday work – in the kitchen\, at the workplace\, in a shop\, at a kindergarten\, or even dusting the hallway at home. For some\, it evokes memories of endearment and caregiving\; for others\, it brings to mind the start of a work shift or a visit to their grandparents’ allotment garden. What do you think of when you hear the word “apron”?\n\nIn this Storytelling Café occasion\, the focus is on the long-overlooked work apron and the women who wear it. Everyone with memories of smocked aprons are welcome to come along and share their stories – or just listen. Feel free to bring photos with you related to this work wear —or even the aprons themselves.\n\nFree admission\, the event is being held in German. If you are interested\, please register online at stmd.de\, or with the visitor services of the Dresden City Museum: 0351 488 7272 (Mon – Fri).\n\nThe event is connected to the festival’s “Work in Progress” focal theme and expands upon the Dresden City Museum’s special programme “Pre-Fab EAST/WEST: Building and Living in Prefabricated High-Rises”.\n\nThe afternoon event is being presented by Stefanie Reis\, a cultural scientist and smocked apron researcher who has intensively scrutinised aprons and their significance as memory fabrics\n– such as in her podcast “In an apron with …”\, the world’s first ever podcast on this subject.\n\nThe Storytelling Café is kindly sponsored by Eisenfeustel – a traditional shop in Dresden-Neustadt brimming with high-quality items for the kitchen\, bathroom\, home and garden. In April 2026\, the shop is celebrating its 105th year in business on Bautzner Straße – where it is now located in number 51. Over the years\, the Eisenfeustel shop has faced changes with a timeless dependability. And for decades\, two legendary sisters wearing identical smocked aprons ran the Eisenfeustel shop.
