DESCRIPTION:Since 1998\, the National Competition has been one of FILMFEST DRESDEN’s two heart chambers\, pumping pure passion for short films through the veins\, arteries and capillaries of the festival\, heartbeat by heartbeat. A relic from a bygone millennium? Not at all. More than ever\, national filmmaking has become a monitor checking our pulse during times of chaos\, crises and wars in a hypertonic world. Responding and reacting to this world\, resonating and reflecting it\; sometimes colourful\, other times monochrome\; or wild and loud\, quiet and silent\, poetic or roaring: For short film is not merely our companion – it is a pacemaker\, an echoing\, a dream catcher and a breaker of waves.\nFrom the hundreds of entries submitted this year\, our National Competition Selection Committee has compiled a thrilling programme. In the 25 short films\, including ten animated works\, our national filmmakers are pursuing new narratives and aesthetics\, letting old worlds implode and revealing new spaces for characters and stories. With fantastical animals and fairy-tale characters encountering dystopian scenarios and existential crises\, AI nightmares and travels through time\, media-archaeological discoveries\, a utopian dance musical\, fruit flies\, exercises to procrastinate more effectively and New Year’s Eve in a different Palestine.
