SUMMARY:Tribute: Jyoti Mistry – Uncompromising Audacity
DESCRIPTION:As a filmmaker\, installation artist and academic\, South African-born Jyoti Mistry operates at the interface of art\, cinema and critical visual practice. She views film not merely as a narrative medium\, but as a form of knowledge: a location where images can store\, shape – and at the same time obscure – history.\nCommencing with a resolutely non-Western perspective\, she aims – with great formal audacity – to challenge and transform canonical knowledge. A central element of her work consists of her engagement with already existing visual material: Archival footage\, amateur films and found footage from colonial and popular cultural visual worlds become transformed into precise filmic essays through montage\, texts\, animation and voice-overs. Through this\, the archive becomes a location for the political reclaiming of the experiences and perspectives of marginalised groups who would remain invisible otherwise.\nOn a formal level\, Mistry’s cinema is characterised by its great openness: Documentary\, experimental and essayistic elements blend together seamlessly\, with the rhythm\, sound and language playing just as central a role as the image itself. Her works reveal a poetic structure less driven by storytelling and more concerned with making trains of thought visible – while continually questioning the ideological structures of seeing itself. For it is in this compaction that the unique power of the short form is found\, one that Mistry avails of repeatedly as a space for formal freedom and critical interventions.\nIn addition to works that have already been screened at festivals and in exhibition settings\, FILMFEST DRESDEN is also presenting a world premiere in this tribute to her. The masterclass\, which is part of the tribute\, is providing a deeper insight into the works of Jyoti Mistry. \n\nCurated by Jyoti Mistry\, Sven Pötting\, Florian Schattauer
