SUMMARY:Retrospective: Places of Work
DESCRIPTION:The first film by the brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière lasted barely a minute and documented the end of a workday. It shows men and women walking together through a factory gate before quickly disappearing to the left and right of the frame: LA SORTIE DE L’USINE LUMIÈRE À LYON (France\, 1895) was the first film ever to be screened. Thus\, the history of the film medium is closely linked to a workplace. \nThe birth of cinema also coincided with a time when the world of work was undergoing fundamental changes. There was heated debate at that time about how these changes might and indeed would shape society’s ideals and values. We now find ourselves in a period of upheaval yet again\, one that is making a new and even more rapid structural transformation visible to everyone and tangible in all areas of life.\nThe festival’s “Work in Progress” thematic focus programmes are intended to reflect this world of work “in progress”. This year’s retrospective is casting a light on working people and their lifeworlds from the second half of the 20th century to the present day. It consists of a filmic journey highlighting building culture and places of work\, one that takes us from West German supermarkets via the proletarian East German GDR countryside to the wide expanses of Europe. Doing so we become immersed in the laconic\, whimsical cosmos of Aki Kaurismäki and descend into the mines of Sicily\; we encounter relics of the German economic miracle era and discover a creative hub where living and working spaces are being combined in an almost utopian way.\n\nCurated by Thorsten Birne\, Sven Pötting\, Sven Voigt
