SUMMARY:Central German Competition
DESCRIPTION:Yet again this year\, the works selected for this competition section reflect the dynamic film scene in Central Germany and showcase the innovative spirit of the region’s film culture. Thematically\, the films navigate a field of tension between local and global issues. A tendency for having internationalisation aspects\, co-productions and a diversity of spoken languages is evident in the individual works. Various genres are represented here\, including documentary films that are not usually seen in such a pure form in the National and International Competitions. A clear trend for having the essay film\, as a specific form of “audio-visual thinking”\, is also evident. Such a form narrates in a less linear manner\, weaving together associations\, personal memories and thoughts\, as well as social issues\, into a multilayered narrative. This openness allows complex themes to be explored in a poetic\, surprising way and actively involves the audience in the consideration and reflection process.\nCOLD CALL is an essayistic documentary that also serves as a link to the festival’s thematic focus on “Work in Progress”. It explores digital vigilantism\, global labour structures and inequality\, as well as a criminal phenomenon known as scamming\, one that only reveals its implications at second glance and prompts the viewers to question hasty judgments about who the perpetrators are. The short film THE WEIGHT OF ALL THINGS explores the inner life of its young protagonist and is concerned with the immense strain of care work that pushes a young woman – who has just completed secondary school and should be enjoying her life – to her limits. NEITHER FISH NOR FOWL is a poetic documentary about a domesticated cow’s escape into the wilderness\, inspiring reflection on the boundaries between nature and culture and questioning our concepts of freedom\, care and control. LOVE YOUR NAILS! is a partially AI-generated film that plays with reversed gender roles to question history\, visibility and social codes. UNNOTICED DEATH follows a team of crime scene cleaners as they clean the apartment of a person who died alone\, reminding us of how an entire life can often vanish without witnesses or traces. A DAUGHTER AND TEN SONS portrays young adults searching for their own path in life between the post-Soviet present day and the promises of the American Dream. Finally\, the music video ZERSPLITTER DEIN GLAS combines self-reflections on intimacy\, insecurity and emotional turmoil with a melancholic groove to create an intense (tonal) experience.\n\nSven Pötting on behalf of the selection committee for the Central German Competition
