SUMMARY:Regional Focus: The Eye of Dresden – Retrospective Ernst Hirsch
DESCRIPTION:Dresden of old\, the Wettin Prince-Electors’ magnificent residence\, its Baroque era pearls – such ascriptions continue to shape the Saxon state capital city’s image of itself to the present day. But this old Dresden went up in flames during World War 2\, a fate it shared with many other major German cities. Yet in none of them has this remained so vivid in their collective memory to this day compared to Dresden. This may\, however\, have to do with the countless images of old Dresden once captured on light-sensitive film footage. For ultimately\, Dresden was not only a historical backdrop but\, for a time\, also Europe’s largest production location for photo cameras\, film cameras\, projectors\, photographic paper and film stock. Material that\, of course\, had to be tested somewhere\, with all of Dresden’s Baroque splendour providing motifs not only for countless photographs but even for numerous motion pictures.\nWe have Ernst Hirsch to thank for the fact that so many of these works have been preserved. The Dresden-based cinematographer\, documentary filmmaker and director amassed a vast collection of historical films about Dresden in his private archive\, the oldest of which date back to 1903. But it was not only his passion for collecting that earned Ernst Hirsch the nickname “The Eye of Dresden”. At the age of nine\, he witnessed the city’s destruction\, before he then personally documented its reconstruction with his film camera. He created numerous documentary records of Dresden’s works of art and the artists who worked here\, yet he also did not shy away from subjects that were shameful to the people of Dresden\, such as the “Jewish camp” at Heller.\nPart of Ernst Hirsch’s archive was already digitalised in 2018 by the Saxon State Library – Dresden State and University Library (SLUB) and the Saxon Film Association during the pilot phase of their mutual SAVE (Securing the Audio-Visual Heritage in Saxony) Programme launched to preserve such material. Last year\, SLUB and the Dresden City Museum acquired Hirsch’s entire film and camera footage collection in order to preserve it for future generations and make it accessible to the public. A small compilation from a total of more than 400 film reels is now being screened in Filmfest Dresden’s “Regional Focus” section to mark Ernst Hirsch’s upcoming 90th birthday. The focus here is on historical archival material from the period before 1945\, supplemented by the filmmaker’s own footage of the reconstruction of the Zwinger palatial complex\, the Dresden Catholic Cathedral and today’s Wilsdruffer Straße from the 1950s and 60s\, as well as the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) from the 1990s. The film footage\, some of which is silent\, is set to live music performed by Johannes Gerstengarbe.\n\nCurated by André Hennig\, Ernst Hirsch\, Lukas Schneider\n\nBefore the screening begins on Wednesday\, the Saxon Film Association is inviting all the guests to a small free-of-charge reception.\n\nAbout SAVE – Securing the Audio-Visual Heritage in Saxony \nSince 2016\, the Saxon Film Association together with the Saxon State Library – Dresden State and University Library (SLUB) have applied themselves to preserving analogue audio-visual media related to the Free State of Saxony. Through the SAVE (Securing the Audio-Visual Heritage in Saxony) Federal State Programme\, audio-visual cultural assets and research documents related to Saxony are being professionally digitalised\, made publicly accessible\, and permanently preserved for the future. The SAVE Federal State Programme is being supported by the Saxon State Ministry of Science\, Culture and Tourism from funds provided on the basis of the budget approved by the Saxon State Parliament.
